The South Palm Canyon Bridge Project will replace the existing bridge over Tahquitz Creek in Palm Springs. Construction will take place between Mesquite Avenue and Sunny Dunes Road on South Palm Canyon Drive. 

The existing bridge was constructed in the 1930’s and improved in the 1950’s with the addition of the two outer lanes along with the associated railings and facades. The nearly 100-year-old bridge has been deemed structurally deficient by Caltrans and must be demolished and reconstructed for public safety.  

The project will improve safety, accessibility, and bring the bridge up to current infrastructure standards. Key upgrades include: 

• A new, modern bridge that meets current safety and design standards 

• Wider sidewalks and dedicated bike lanes for improved pedestrian and cyclist access 

• Aesthetic enhancements, including a public art installation in the center median 

• A concrete barrier rail with public art installations on both sides of the bridge

Construction began in March 2025 and will be completed by late 2026. 

A City arborist has marked nine trees to be relocated and two to be removed due to declining health. The viable palms will be carefully removed and stored at a City facility for use in future projects. A new location that supports long-term survivability will be selected by City staff.

Upon project completion landscape plans for the new center median on the bridge include seven palm trees and desert vegetation, and the median south of the bridge will include nine palms and desert vegetation. Visit here to see artist renderings.

• S. Palm Canyon Drive will be reduced from 4 to 2 travel lanes, with one lane open in each direction throughout construction. 

• Work will be completed in two phases: first demolishing and rebuilding the western lanes, then shifting traffic onto the new span while the eastern lanes are reconstructed. 

• Motorists should expect delays and are encouraged to use alternate routes. 

• A sidewalk will remain open on one side of the bridge during construction.
