About The NEW BRIDGE AND SCOPE OF WORK
The existing bridge, originally constructed in 1930, is outdated and structurally deficient. Also, the current bridge approach configuration creates a bottleneck for traffic on S. Palm Canyon Drive.
The project constructs a new, 98-foot-long bridge on S. Palm Canyon Dr. across Tahquitz Creek and reconstructs the roadway approach at both ends of the bridge to improve safety, traffic flow, and mobility connection. The new bridge includes:
- State-of-the-art structural, seismic, and hydraulic design
- 2 traffic lanes in each direction, 4 lanes in total
- A 14-foot-wide concrete center median with a public art installation
- Concrete barrier rail with public art installations on both sides of the bridge
- Widened, 8-foot concrete sidewalks in both directions
- A dedicated bicycle lane in each direction
- Reconstructs the roadway approach at both ends to address the existing traffic bottleneck
- Removes and replaces the asphalt roadway, striping and concrete median north of the bridge to Sunny Dunes Road
- Adds an ADA accessible driveway and pedestrian ramps at the intersection with Sunny Dunes Rd
- Connects the southbound bike lane to Mesquite Road
- Reconstructs Tahquitz Trail west of the bridge
